Book Club

Once a month or so I enjoy going to my book club meeting with a group of friends to discuss a selection of one member’s choice. So for all of those of you who thought this was going to be an article about a book about clubs, you can stop reading now. And you might want to get that dyslexia treated.

A typical evening will go something like this (all times approximate):

8:00 - Members start arriving

8:15 - Discussion about book ensues

8:30 - Discussion about book devolves into something about wine or food.

10:00 - After 90 minutes discussing the latest episode of 24, everyone heads home.

(If anyone from book club is reading this, I am not complaining in any way!) But for the few minutes when we are actually discussing the book in question, there are many interesting points raised, many points of view of which other members had not considered when reading the book.

Here’s an example:

Someone says, “I thought the Machivellian aspects of the book were overclouded by the irony present when the main character made that allusion to Tolstoy.”

Another responds, “I agree. I’m not sure what the author was trying to say there.”

Silence, then:

Me: “You know that part at the end where the girl dies, well, I thought that was stupid.”
