The Comedy Masterpiece

Returning home from watching the decent Superbad, I was struck with a thought. Have their been any true comedy masterpieces? I’m talking the Shawshank of comedy. And not just a fantastic movie that has comedy elements, but a movie that is memorably and timelessly funny.

There haven’t even been that many contenders. You could make a strong argument for the Monty Python movies, but they tend to be more of movie-length skit collections. IMDb’s list of top comedy movies includes Forrest Gump and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Neither is that funny.

Here are a small handful of contenders for comedy masterpiece: Office Space, The Princess Bride, Airplane, The Naked Gun. These movies are nothing without their funny, and funny they are. Do you have any more suggestions?

My Fiance’s Rating System of My Music

I generally hear one of 5 things when the missus listens to music from my collection. Here they are with associated comments from me:

  1. Ugggh, that’s torturous (usually reserved for Static-X)
  2. That’s just awful. Please turn it off.
  3. I’m indifferent to that.
  4. Well, that’s not as bad as most of the crap you listen to.
  5. Hey, that’s Bon Jovi! (To which I respond, ‘How did that get in there?’ and ‘Have you seen my blowtorch?’)
